Since Monday, August 24, 2026, some Swiss ChatGPT users have been seeing ads. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads in 31 European markets on that day, Switzerland being one of them. This has created a new paid channel directly within the interface that, according to the 2026 IGEM-Digimonitor, is used at least occasionally by around 4.3 million people among the internet-using population aged 15 to 75.
However, as a Swiss company, you cannot yet book this space on your own. There is a lot of inaccurate information circulating on this exact point, and that is precisely what this article aims to address.
Since when: Ads have been served to Swiss users since August 24, 2026.
Who sees them: Ad-supported free accounts and the Go subscription. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans remain ad-free, as do accounts that OpenAI classifies as being under 18. The free tier also includes an ad-free version with lower usage limits.
What it looks like: A block marked as sponsored below the response, clearly separated, with no influence on the response itself.
How targeting works: Based on the context of the ongoing conversation, the landing page, the ad's title and text, and any cues you provide in your account. There is no keyword targeting or demographic filtering as seen on established platforms.
Personalization: Not available in Switzerland and the EEA at launch.
Ad account: As of August 27, 2026, still listed as "Coming Soon" for Switzerland according to the OpenAI help page. The channel can currently be booked via OpenAI's Ads Solutions team as well as through agency and technology partners.
Permitted categories: Financial and healthcare services are generally prohibited outside the US, and legal services are prohibited entirely.
OpenAI officially announced the European expansion on August 18, 2026, six months after the launch of the US pilot program in February. The announcement contains three sentences that matter for planning. First, ChatGPT Ads is reaching 31 European countries. Second, access is initially provided via the Ads Solutions team, agency partners, and technology partners. Third, self-service access via the Ads Manager will follow later.
The announcement does not list the 31 countries individually. The availability help page does. They are the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. In other words, the EEA plus Switzerland, not "Europe" in the broad sense. The UK is not part of this wave; advertising has been running there since June 2026.
There are two doors, and they do not open at the same time.
The first door is the delivery side. It is open. Anyone using ChatGPT in Switzerland for free or with the Go subscription has been able to see ads below responses since August 24.
The second door is the advertiser side. As of August 27, 2026, OpenAI's official availability table still lists Switzerland under "Coming Soon." Nine markets are available there: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA. A second indicator supports this. The table with minimum daily budgets in the OpenAI help center lists ten countries from Australia to the USA. An amount in Swiss francs is missing.
For you, this means specifically: If someone promises you a ChatGPT Ads account ready for immediate use for a Swiss company today, it is worth asking exactly how that is supposed to work. Legitimate paths exist. The route via OpenAI's Ads Solutions team, an agency partner, or a technology partner is real and described as such by OpenAI. A self-service login for a Swiss company is not available on the day this post is published.
Monitor this table yourself; it is the only reliable source for the status. We check it daily and update this post accordingly.
The Format
According to OpenAI, the documented standard consists of six components: advertiser name, favicon, headline, text, landing page, and image. The ad appears below the response, visually separated and marked as sponsored. It does not appear in temporary chats.
In addition, there are feed-based campaigns as a separate campaign type, where OpenAI generates ads from a product catalog. And via the three-dot menu on the ad, users can hide them, report them, or drag them into the chat to ask ChatGPT about them. The format is therefore more restricted than with Google or Meta, but it is not static.
Ad Delivery
This is the biggest difference from Google Ads. There are no keywords in the traditional sense. According to OpenAI, the system evaluates several signals: the context and intent of the ongoing conversation, the ad's landing page, the headline, the text, and the so-called context hints that you provide at the ad group level.
These context hints are the real lever. OpenAI describes them as descriptions of what your offering does, who it helps, and when it is useful. The example from the documentation is instructive. Instead of "running shoes," OpenAI recommends phrasing like "cushioned everyday running shoes for beginners training for their first 5K." It is explicitly noted: This is not exact-match control and not audience targeting. Delivery in a specific conversation is not guaranteed.
Anyone who has optimized for generative systems before will recognize the pattern immediately. What is required is precisely described application knowledge, not a list of keywords.
Pricing Model and Auction
There are three goals: CPM for reach, CPC for clicks, and oCPC for conversion-optimized clicks. With oCPC, you still pay per valid click, not per conversion. Selection is made via a relevance-weighted second-price auction.
There are two official figures regarding costs. OpenAI recommends a maximum bid of 3 to 5 US dollars per click as a starting point for CPC campaigns, and the help section mentions minimum daily budgets per market, around 25 US dollars in the USA. Both apply to markets that are already open. For Switzerland, as of August 27, 2026, there is neither a minimum budget in Swiss francs nor reliable click prices. Everything currently circulating regarding CPC values comes from US accounts, trade press, or agency observations. Anyone giving you a franc amount per click today is guessing.
Measurement
According to OpenAI, impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions are available. In addition, there is a pixel, a Conversions API, and connections to measurement partners. UTM parameters on the destination URL are preserved upon clicking and work within your existing analytics setup. This is the easiest first step and works regardless of how the booking is made.
The lack of personalization shifts the weight significantly. If you cannot set the target audience, everything else determines performance: the offer, the ad copy, the description of use cases, and the landing page. The channel rewards content-driven work and punishes negligence because there is no targeting crutch to save a weak message.
Regarding geographic targeting, the OpenAI documentation is not entirely consistent. The main text describes control at the country level and mentions states, DMAs, and zip codes only for the USA. The FAQ on the same page states that region, city, and zip code can be selected where available, and that this varies by country. Therefore, do not rely on a rule of thumb; instead, look for your location in the campaign's location selection field. OpenAI also provides the current location catalog as a CSV download.
The OpenAI advertising guidelines, last updated on August 10, 2026, are the most unpleasant part of the news for the Swiss market.
In the early phase, household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, as well as digital products and education are primarily permitted.
Excluded or heavily restricted categories include, among others:
Then there is the placement page. According to OpenAI, ads do not appear near sensitive contexts; specifically mentioned are personal health, mental health, and politics. For reach planning, this means that a portion of conversations is not available for advertising at all.
Check your category before you plan your budget. For a travel company, a furniture retailer, a local service provider, or a provider of digital products, the channel is open. For a private bank, it is currently not.
When you submit an ad, OpenAI visits your landing page. It does this using its own crawler for two reasons: to check for policy compliance and to understand which conversations the ad is relevant to.
OAI-AdsBot must be explicitly allowed. OAI-SearchBot is also recommended. If the landing page is not accessible to the crawler, the ad will not be approved. According to OpenAI, a manual workaround via support is explicitly not a solution.
OpenAI identifies three levels where crawlers typically fail:
For stable IP whitelisting, OpenAI points to two files: openai.com/searchbot.json and openai.com/adsbot.json.
This is not a side issue. In audits, we regularly see Swiss websites whose robots.txt files block AI crawlers across the board—often due to a decision from 2024 that made sense at the time. Anyone wanting to advertise on ChatGPT today is effectively sidelining themselves.
A common misunderstanding should be cleared up right away. Cloudflare is changing its default behavior for AI crawlers as of September 15, 2026, but this affects the training and agent categories on sites with advertising. OAI-AdsBot is not affected; it is verified as a validation crawler by Cloudflare. The two topics run in parallel. The reason to look at both now, however, is the same. If you are cleaning up your bot rules anyway, check accessibility for OAI-AdsBot in the same pass.
Therefore, prioritize checking your crawler access before campaign planning, not after.
ChatGPT Ads and visibility in AI responses are two separate things, and OpenAI is clear on this point. Ads do not influence responses. They run on separate systems; advertisers can neither design nor reorder responses.
This leads to a simple but often overlooked consequence. Paid placements reach free and Go users. They do not reach anyone with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu subscriptions. In many B2B contexts, that is exactly where the more affluent half of the target audience is located. If you want to reach these people, you cannot avoid the work of a GEO agency—that is, appearing within the answer itself rather than next to it.
The good news is that both disciplines draw from the same substance. Clearly described use cases, verifiable information, clean structure, and accessible pages work in both directions. The context hints that make a campaign effective are created from the same material as the content a model cites in a response. Anyone who has already precisely documented their own offering logic—because an SEO agency built it up as part of ongoing work—starts in the new channel with a head start.
We are honest about the current status. We have no Swiss campaign data because it cannot exist as of August 27, 2026. Here is what we are doing:
As soon as we have our own data from the Swiss market, we will publish it here, including the time frame, budget scope, and limitations. Until then, we will not provide benchmarks, only the sources that actually exist.
Self-service access is the change that really matters. OpenAI has announced it for "later this summer" without providing a specific date. The availability table in the help section remains the only reliable indicator, and it can change without notice. Those who are prepared will be able to launch in days rather than weeks.
Two expansions are likely to follow, which will make the channel significantly more useful for Swiss advertisers. Personalized ads are not available at launch, but OpenAI has already outlined user control options should they be introduced. Furthermore, the list of permitted categories is expected to grow as their internal review systems mature. For finance, healthcare, and legal services, this is currently the only prospect on the horizon.
Two minor points belong on your watchlist. How precisely geographic targeting can be controlled outside the US is poorly documented and will only become clear once accounts open and the location selection field is visible. For local businesses, this is the critical question. Additionally, feed-based campaigns already exist as a distinct campaign type; they will become the most important lever for retail clients as soon as Swiss accounts are live.
None of these steps require media spend, and all seven can be completed before your first campaign goes live. Steps two through four contribute to your visibility in AI responses anyway, regardless of whether you ever run an ad. That is exactly why it pays to start now rather than waiting until the day the accounts open.
Two things can be clarified today without needing an active ad account. First, whether your category is even permitted under OpenAI’s advertising policies. Second, whether the OAI-AdsBot can reach your landing pages, or if your robots.txt, firewall, or bot protection are blocking it. We’ll check both for you and provide the results as a brief assessment, including findings and specific adjustments.
Once the foundation is solid, we’ll prepare the campaign structure so you aren't starting from scratch the day your account opens. And if anything changes regarding your status, we’ll let you know.
